The figure of Christ is one of the most important themes in western art history. Biblical narratives centred on Jesus are the subject of countless paintings and sculptures from ancient times to present day. Christ is a symbol of suffering, sacrifice, salvation, God's love, and the Divine in human form. He has also been the subject of scorn and disbelief. Join us for a whirlwind tour of famous and less familiar artworks of Christ, secret symbolism, and mystery, from the distant past to modern times. Learn how different artists approached the Christ story, whether inspired by church commissions or personal devotion. We will use a couple of artworks to inspire our own poems or stories.
