Rocks and Sea
"build all toward one eye--
make all lines lead toward that eye"
A modest ghost looks on this scene,
or a mummy, wrapped, alert,
or a plain but never empty mask,
an elementary emergence,
small gray form, mere patch on rough rock.
I see it hovering, watching the waters.
The scene itself unsettles,
sears the sight.
The ordinary eye is burned away.
The gods, the simple surging gods, are crashing here.
