Perhaps there’s something
to the way the word or long stretch of syllables
commanded separation--
 
a firmament
dividing waters from waters, above
and below,
 
how the rising tide
of tone and temperature, liquid and light
lifted
 
heaven for height,
drew earth for breadth and depth
expanding
 
that which was before it was--
 
the way the fullness of a paintbrush
canvasses the blankness.
