The Blue Church, Prescott, by Prudence Heward (Canada), 1933.
Shivering in the Church Yard

His
tombstone
cast
a long
shadow,
stretching
from
his
death
toward
hers.
She began skipping
church, afraid to watch
his reach growing
shorter.

Alarie Tennille

This poem was written for the Surprise Challenge, ekphrastic poetry from Canadian paintings.

Another beautiful poem from Alarie. I love how she visually stretched the words to extend the length of the shadow then condensing them as his reach grew shorter.

Agreed, Tammy! And thanks for discussing the structure of the poem on the page; I love learning about things like that. Alarie, beautifully done!

Beautiful. Alarie, you can say so much in a very few words.

I love how Alarie's poetry makes me see a painting in a whole new way and captures its essence.

Alarie's words combined with the picture caused a shiver down my spine as I sensed the woman's fear.

Wow, Alarie.
I missed this one when you first posted it. Beautiful, concise poems that "says it all."
